Shipping Weight [shipping_weight] Field for Product Feed

Provide the package weight for carrier-calculated shipping rates in Merchant Center.

Example of shipping weight field usage in a product feed

Optional for each product

The shipping_weight attribute specifies the weight used to calculate shipping costs in Merchant Center.
This is particularly important when using carrier-calculated rates or shipping weight tables.

If the package weight exceeds supported limits, use the shipping_label attribute instead to configure special rates.

When to use

  • When shipping cost calculations in Merchant Center are based on weight.
  • For carrier-calculated rates or weight-based shipping tables.
  • To ensure accurate shipping costs, especially for heavy or bulky items.

If your product requires freight or LTL (Less Than Truckload) shipping, configure these separately using shipping labels and tables.

Format

  • Type: Number plus unit.
  • Supported units: lb, oz, g, kg
  • Limits:
    • Imperial: 0–2000 lb
    • Metric: 0–1000 kg
  • Decimals: Supported (e.g., 1.25 kg)
  • Repeated field: No

Formatting examples:

File formatExample value
Text feed3 kg
XML feed<g:shipping_weight>3 kg</g:shipping_weight>

Minimum requirements

  • Use actual shipping weight (including packaging).
  • Pair with dimensions (shipping_length, shipping_width, shipping_height) if using carrier rates that consider volumetric weight.
  • Avoid exceeding carrier limits — use shipping_label for oversized/freight items.

Products with invalid formats or exceeding limits will be disapproved.

SEO Tip

While not customer-facing, accurate shipping weight helps ensure the right delivery options are shown improving trust and preventing cart abandonment due to unexpected shipping costs.
