Material [material] Field for Product Feed

Describe the main fabric or material of your product to improve filtering and help shoppers find relevant variants.

Example of filtering products by material in a Google Shopping listing

Required for products that vary by material (Google & ChatGPT)

The material attribute specifies the main fabric or material that a product is made of. It is used to create accurate filters and display correct product variants. This attribute is relevant for apparel, furniture, hardware, and other product categories where material can influence purchase decisions.

When to use

  • Required for all products that vary by material.
  • Optional for any products where material is a significant feature.

Format

  • Type: Unicode characters (ASCII recommended), not case sensitive
  • Limits: 0–200 characters
  • Repeated field: No
  • Schema.org property: Product.material

File format examples:

File formatExample entry
Text feedLeather
XML feed<g:material>Leather</g:material>

If a product is made from multiple materials, list one primary material followed by up to two secondary materials separated by a slash (/):
Example: cotton/polyester/elastane

Minimum requirements

  • State the main fabric or material of the product.
  • Submit this attribute for all products that vary by material.
  • For variants, use the same item_group_id across products that differ by material.
  • You may include up to 3 materials in one value, separated by slashes (/).
  • Do not place unrelated attributes (color, size, pattern) in this field.
  • Do not submit placeholder values like “n/a”, “none”, or “multi”.

Best practices

  • Submit a material whenever relevant — not only for apparel.
  • For precious metals, submit both material and color attributes.
  • Use clear and understandable terms — avoid abbreviations like “lthr” for “leather”.
  • Include multiple materials when applicable (e.g., wool/cashmere).
  • Avoid irrelevant or misleading terms.

SEO Tip

Accurate material values help your products appear in relevant filtered searches. Providing specific details (e.g., “Italian leather” instead of just “leather”) can improve click-through rates, especially in premium product categories.
