GTIN [gtin] Field for Product Feed

The Global Trade Item Number helps Google identify your product. Submitting a correct GTIN improves visibility and classification.

Example of GTIN location on product packaging

Required for each product with an assigned GTIN (Google & ChatGPT)

The gtin attribute allows Google to uniquely identify and classify products. GTINs improve your product’s discoverability and performance across Google surfaces.

When to use

  • Required for all products with a GTIN assigned by the manufacturer.
  • Also submit GTIN for store-brand or custom products if one exists.
  • If unsure, do not guess a GTIN.

Accepted GTIN types:

  • UPC (GTIN-12) — North America (12 digits)
  • EAN (GTIN-13) — Europe (13 digits)
  • JAN (GTIN-13) — Japan (8 or 13 digits)
  • ISBN (GTIN-13) — Books (13 digits)
  • ITF-14 — Multipacks (14 digits)

Format

  • Type: Number (spaces and dashes allowed but ignored)
  • Limits: 0, 8, 12, 13, or 14 digits
  • Repeated field: Up to 10
  • Schema.org properties: Product.gtin8, gtin12, gtin13, gtin14, isbn

GTIN formatting examples:

File formatExample entry
Text feed3234567890126
XML feed<g:gtin>3234567890126</g:gtin>

Minimum requirements

  • Submit a valid GTIN as defined by GS1 standards.
  • Ensure the check digit is correct using the GS1 Check Digit Calculator.
  • Do not submit restricted prefixes (e.g. 02, 04, 2, 05, 98, 99).
  • Use the correct GTIN for each variant (color, size, etc.).
  • Don’t submit made-up or guessed GTINs.
  • Don’t reuse GTINs for different products.

SEO Tip

A valid GTIN allows your products to surface more often, match with rich product data, and appear in relevant comparisons. Always prefer submitting it when available.
